Benign enlargement of the prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition affecting many men as they age. While it is not cancerous, it can cause bothersome symptoms that impact quality of life. Let’s explore what causes this condition and why it occurs.

What Is the Prostate?

The prostate is a small gland located just below the bladder and surrounds the tube (urethra) that carries urine out of the body. Its main role is to produce fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. As men age, the prostate often grows larger, which can lead to symptoms if it presses on the bladder or urethra.

What Causes Benign Prostate Enlargement?

The exact reasons why the prostate enlarges are not fully understood, but several factors are known to contribute:

1. Ageing:

BPH is more common as men get older. From around the age of 50, many men begin to notice symptoms related to prostate enlargement. By the age of 60, about half of men experience some degree of BPH, and this rises to about 90% by the age of 85.

2. Hormonal Changes:

Hormones play a significant role in prostate growth. Testosterone, the primary male hormone, is converted into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) within the prostate. DHT encourages prostate cells to grow. As men age, changes in hormone levels, including a relative decrease in testosterone and an increase in oestrogen, can lead to prostate enlargement.

3. Genetics:

If your father or brothers have had BPH, your risk of developing it may be higher. Family history can influence how early and how severely you might experience symptoms.

4. Lifestyle Factors:

While ageing and genetics are key factors, certain lifestyle habits may also contribute to the risk of BPH. For example:

  •  Lack of exercise
  •  Being overweight
  • Poor dietary choices, such as diets high in unhealthy fats and low in vegetables and fruits

5. Chronic Health Conditions:

Conditions like diabetes and heart disease have been linked to a higher risk of BPH. These conditions may affect blood flow and hormone levels, influencing prostate growth.

Final Thoughts:

Benign prostate enlargement is a natural part of ageing for many men, but understanding the causes can help you take steps to manage your health. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle and seeking medical advice when needed, you can effectively address the symptoms and continue enjoying life to the fullest.
